Special Education in Texas

Gaining Initial Certification

Certification for elementary education (preschool), elementary school, high school and special education runs through similar process. For special education, however, there are some specific requirements:
  1. You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to be certified in special education. Every potential special education teacher must have an academic major specifically tailored to helping special needs students, preferably in special education. Additionally, teacher training courses tailored to either elementary or secondary education must be taken as a part of that program.
  2. You must also complete teacher training through an approved program in the state of Texas. These programs are offered through various colleges and universities, school districts, regional service centers, community colleges, and other entities. Additionally some also offered online, make sure to check this website to see if a Texas online certification course is offered here. They must be approved by the Texas Education Agency.
  3. You must successfully complete the appropriate teacher certification tests for the subject and grade level specific to early childhood education. These tests, also known as the TExES tests are required to be taken in specific subjects and areas. In this case, the special education test is required.
