Gaining Initial Certification
Certification for elementary education (preschool), elementary school, high school and special education runs through similar process. However there are some areas specific to elementary education:
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to be certified to teach in elementary schools.
Every potential elementary school teacher must have an academic major, preferably in education or elementary education. Additionally,
teacher training courses must be taken as a part of that program.
You must also complete teacher training through an approved program in the state of Texas.
These programs are offered through various colleges and universities, school districts, regional service centers, community colleges,

They must be approved by the Texas Education Agency.
You must successfully complete the appropriate teacher certification tests for the subject and grade level specific to elementary education.
These tests, also known as the TExES tests are available in a variety of subjects, including elementary education.
There are also specific subjects for elementary school teachers to specialize in specific areas. These areas include English as a second language, health,
music, art, physical education and social studies.
