School Counseling

Before one moves into school counseling, the state of Texas requires that a school
counselor must have two years experience in the classroom. Additionally you must
complete the following:
  1. Successfully complete a school counselor preparation program. While there are many different programs, you must complete a program that is approved by the Texas Education Agency. As a part of this program, the candidates teaching experience will be evaluated by this preparation program. Classroom teacher means an educator who is employed by a school district and who, not less than an average of four hours each day, teachers in an academic instructional setting or a career and technology instructional setting. Out of state teaching experience can be considered. Substitute teaching experience would not normally be accepted for certification purpose
  2. Pass the school counselor certification exam. Just like the certification process for teachers, Texas has a specific TExES exam that school counselors are required to take.
  3. Hold a Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. The counselor preparation program will determine what sort of degree that the candidate will need to complete.
