Principals and Superintendents

To become an administrator at a school , either a principal or superintendent, you must
first enroll in an educator preparation program that is approved by the Texas Education
Association. Each position then has its own requirements:

To be eligible to become a principal one must:

  • hold a master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • hold a valid classroom teaching certificate
  • have two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher
  • successfully complete an approved principal educator preparation program
  • successfully complete the required TExES exams

In order to be eligible for a superintendent position:

  • must hold, at a minimum, a master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • hold, at a minimum, a principal certificate or the equivalent issued under this title or by another state or country
  • successfully complete an approved superintendent educator preparation program and be recommended for certification by that program
  • satisfactorily complete the TExES exam for superintendent certification
